Scientific Research at the GMC, Jammu
A research form is an integral part of the education programme of
the Institute. Scientific inquiry includes basic research, and
clinic research. Questions about a disease and its diagnosis and
therapy are raised in a clinical setting, and answer obtained by
using scientific methods in the laboratory is then translated into
clinical practice. Writing a thesis/dissertation inculcates in the
candidate the basic elements of planning and executing a scientific
experiment with a well-defined objective. These are the basis of an
advance in scientific experiment with a well-defined objective.
These are the basis of an advance in scientific thought or problem
management. The candidates also undergo a short training course in
general research methodology and bio-statistical methods in medical
research.
GMC has always made an endeavour to direct its various research
activities to the relative needs of the society. The research work
is carried out in accordance with nationally and internationally
approved guidelines. It has to be cleared by a committee of experts
from the viewpoint of its necessity and safety of the subjects to be
studied along with its ethics. The student pursuing the post
graduation courses are required to write a thesis/dissertation on a
particular subject. During training the residents thus gain a first
hand experience of conducting research in the laboratories along
with community and patient care management. All the departments
undertake research in the area of national importance. A unique
feature of research at this Institute is the establishment of the
Department of Experimental Medicine which helps various clinical
departments to have an in-depth research at the level of molecular
biology and basic sciences to correlate with the various clinical
problems e.g. hypertension, coronary artery disease, rheumatic heart
diseases, mal-absorption, etc.
The research output has been incredible and has found recognition at
the various national and international forums. A number of faculty
members have been honoured at the national level by the awards.
Every year more than 300 research articles are published in National
and International journals.

Government Medical College Srinagar.
Established 1959. A Government of Jammu & Kashmir Institution
Government Medical College, a premier institute of J&K was founded
in the year 1959 with the aim of imparting quality education and
provide basic health services to the people of Jammu and Kashmir by
producing doctors of high calibre from the valley itself, to serve
the large and rather backward population of the state. In the
forthcoming years the college progressed to such an extent that it
surpassed all the initial expectations which the people had from it.
Four decades later GMC Srinagar, along with its associated hospitals
covers every field of health care, from the basic dispensaries to
providing advanced medical facilities like MRI and CT scan to the
masses and that too at heavily subsidized and affordable rates. The
college has played a very important role in the development of
Kashmir and produced a huge number of doctors of the highest quality
and merit. The doctors produced from this college are quickly
absorbed by the hospitals inside and outside the state, and make
sure that they never let down the prestigious institution that had
made doctors out of them. The glory of this institution has
continued up to this day with a hundred bright young doctors passing
out of the gates of the college every year, always remaining miles
ahead from their counterparts who pass from other institutions. Each
day the college and it's hospital provide care and relief to about
10,000 people from near and far off places. Besides providing
teaching to the under-graduate M.B.B.S students the college also
imparts Post graduate training in various fields like Surgery,
Medicine, Pathology, Psychiatry etcetera. The teaching staff
comprises of highly qualified doctors, each of whom is a master in
his or her field. The classes are held in the college and in the
hospitals, as the case may be. The college also conducts educational
tours to different places in India. This college has and will remain
a dream for all the bright and aspiring students of J&K, a dream
whose realization lies in being a part of this institution, an
institution which has shaped the future of so many and continues to
do so. GMC Srinagar was started in 1959 in a place called Hauzribagh
in Srinagar (Capital of Jammu and Kashmir) on the banks of the
Jhelum River. The first principal of GMC Srinagar was Col Murti. The
building was later shifted to the present day location in 1961 and
was inaugurated by Mr. Bakshi Ghulam Muhhamad the then Prime
Minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir on 25th August 1961. The
old location now houses the Lalded hospital for women (Obstretics
and Gynae) and the Children hospital, both of which are associated
hospitals of GMC Srinagar. The college was renowned all over for its
standard of teaching as well as for its breath taking beauty. For
many years the college was ranked at number 4 in all India ranking
of Medical colleges and also retained this ranking for many a years.
Unfortunately due to the political conditions in the state of Jammu
and Kashmir, the college lost much of its shine and glory, losing
its place to colleges which were far behind it in all aspects.
However after 10 years of apathy, and under the able administration
of the new Principal Dr Rouf, the college has come back on its
tracks and with a promise to regain all that it has lost in all
these years.
Associated Hospitals of Govt. Medical
College Srinagar.
Government Medical College has a number of Hospitals Associated with
it, most of them being the largest ones in the state and the most
specialized ones too. These hospitals provide extensive medical care
and facilities to a large chunk of the Kashmiri Population (about

hospitals is intensive as well as affordable for the poor and the
needy. Besides providing patient care , these hospitals also provide
education to the under graduate students studying in GMC Srinagar as
well as the Post Graduate Students having completed their M.B.B.S
courses from the very college as well as other colleges inside and
outside the state. The vast number of patients, together with the
varied complaints and the specialist hospitals make sure that by the
time a student of GMC Srinagar passes out from the college, there is
hardly any disease or condition he or she hasn't seen first hand.
This is a boon and is easily reflected when the GMCites come face to
face with the other graduates from Russia or even the different
parts of India. Also the staffs available in these hospitals are
